Principle Sensor ScientistMedtronic (Northridge, California)Phone: 3104473575 Fax: 3102071009 OverviewMedtronic is the world leader in medical technology, providing lifelong solutions for people with chronic disease. We offer products, therapies and services that enhance or extend the lives of millions of people. Each year, 5 million patients benefit from Medtronic's technology, used to treat conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, neurological disorders, and vascular illnesses. RequirementsEducation Minimum education: Ph.D degree with 5 years of experience in a related field. Management experience preferred. Duties and Responsibilities The individual chosen for this position will perform research leading to insulin delivery algorithms linking glucose sensors and insulin pumps. Specifically, the individual will: •Develop and perform simulations with metabolic models describing insulin action, SC-insulin absorption, and rate of glucose appearance following meals. •Develop mathematical models of the B-cell’s glucose induced insulin response. •Conduct in-vivo studies of closed-loop insulin delivery algorithms and perform subsequent data analysis. •Design and support study protocols investigating closed-loop insulin delivery strategies, both in the ICU (IV insulin delivery) and ambulatory (SC insulin delivery) environment. •Validate the ability of different metabolic models to predict glucose profiles based on insulin delivery and meal intake. Prepare manuscripts summarizing data, together with appropriate statistical analysis, for subsequent peer review publication. •Validate the ability of B-cell models to predict insulin secretory responses to glucose challenges. Prepare manuscripts summarizing data, together with appropriate statistical analysis, for subsequent peer review publication. •Design and perform in-vivo closed-loop insulin delivery studies in both the laboratory and clinical setting. •Interface with engineering, software testing, and regulatory affairs groups to insure SOP are followed. Basic Qualifications: Substantial medical research experience with: -A basic understanding of relevant scientific literature on metabolic models. -A basic understanding of relevant scientific literature on insulin secretion. -Experience with the identification of all types of physiologic models. -Experience with the design and tuning of various types of control algorithms (e.g., PID, MPC). -Experience with analyzing large data sets and performing relevant statistical analysis. Desired/ Preferred Qualifications •Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. •Ph.D in medically related area (preferably diabetes). •Skill with mathematical algorithms (preferable with experience in control systems). •Basic statistical data analysis skills to confidently write grants and peer review journal articles. Physical Requirements: Job may entail periodic manipulation of small pieces of equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, and taste or smell. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
