Overview

Block MEMS, LLC is seeking a Vice President of Research and Development to oversee design, development, and production of an expanding series of spectrometers and other electro-optical products, with emphasis on microelectromechanical (MEMS) products. Block, and its sister company Block Engineering, are located in the metropolitan Boston area and have been leaders in spectrometer development for decades. Block is growing rapidly from a small base with products that are currently used to detect chemical/biological agents. These products would typically be used in the battlefield, or to detect attacks on sensitive facilities at home or abroad. However, the MEMS products will also have growing applications in the commercial/industrial marketplace as well. Current work entails Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers for both standoff and point detection. Block currently has a major Army contract to develop a microelectromechanical (MEMS) point detector using the Sandia SUMMiT-V process. Development has been ongoing for two years. The resultant product will have major market applications in both the government and commercial/industrial sectors. Block Engineering is also the leading provider of remote standoff FTIR’s and is currently partnered with Northrop Grumman to pursue major government contracts for remote chemical and biological detection of toxic agents. Block is also pursuing contracts for tunable laser spectrometers and is developing new detection technologies to meet government and commercial requirements.

Requirements

Minimum 10 years experience in electro optical and/or MEMS engineering. Minimum 5 years experience managing optical MEMS-related research and development efforts. Experience with surface micromachining required. Experience with SUMMiT-V highly desirable. Must be a self starter. High level of initiative required. Must be hands on/individual contributor as well as a strong manager. Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment. B.S. degree in EE, ME, Optics, or Physics. MS degree preferred.

Responsibilities

Primary: Managing the research and development efforts for the company’s line of MEMS products. This includes ongoing development on current products as well as research on new MEMS based electro optical instruments and applications. Secondary: Assisting Block Engineering (co-located with Block) in managing macro FTIR spectrometer development and new spectrometer and/or detection technologies. Writing proposals for new research contracts pertaining to spectrometer development. Providing technical and marketing briefings to current and potential customers (some travel required).
