The area of research will be in the field of MEMS biosensors based on live animal cells. The PhD student will conduct research in my MEMS/Nanotechnology laboratory at City College, and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The student will spend several months per year at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. The student has to have a very strong scientific background in order to be able to conduct interesting MEMS research at MIT. The PhD position is in the Mechanical Engineering department. The student who will apply for this PhD position is required to have a masters degree already completed. The PhD student will have at least the bachelors degree in the Mechanical Engineering Department- but a masters degree in the Mechanical Engineering area will be a plus. The PhD student will need to have good grades for the bachelors degree and the masters degree and excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English. RequirementsThe student must have masters degree and bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from good universities, because the PhD position is in Mechanical Engineering. Students who have experience in MEMS device design or fabrication, electrical measurements and instrumentation are preferred. But a student with a strong background can learn MEMS fabrication after he starts the PhD program. The PhD research involves a high degree of hands-on microfabrication and MEMS device characterization, and it is desirable that the applicants have relevant backgrounds in these areas. ResponsibilitiesAmerican citizenship is a plus but it is not a requirement. The study for the PhD will start in January 2011. The PhD student will travel frequently to MIT and will conduct part of the research there.
