The obvious answer is any third party safety Organization such as UL or FM.
There is also a comprensive safety standard created by Semi Standards,
that can be helpful..

A larger question - does anyone know where someone could turn to for
authoritative advice on safety issues? Giving and taking saftey advise on
a
board such as this seems to be rather ill-advised. I would take advice
that
something is unsafe or that there is a particular safety issue that needs
to
be looked into; however, proclamations of safety from a semi-anonymous
mailing list seem like a bad thing to trust in.
