\ Don't know if this is any help but I experienced similar
problems a long time ago when e-beams were in their infancy. On that
occasion problem was in the cooling of the hearth, water flow was
allowing steam pockets to form and the melt became unstable. The
waterflow was simply in the wrong direction.
